Black tie - what does it mean?
A black-tie occasion calls for formal evening attire. For men, this typically consists of a black bow tie and a tuxedo, while for women, it means a formal gown.
The term dates back to 1885. Ironically, it was then that the dress code among the wealthy began to “relax.” Edward VII swapped his tailcoat for a tuxedo with matching pants. For the monarch, this outfit offered a more comfortable alternative.
This style was later adopted by members of the Tuxedo Club in New York. The changes introduced by Edward VII eventually evolved into what we now know as black tie. However, it still draws inspiration from the tailcoat era, which is reflected in details such as the distinctive collar and the bow tie.

Let’s take a closer look at the individual elements of the outfit for this occasion:
Jacket
When it comes to the jacket, the lapel is an extremely important element. The most traditional and commonly seen lapel in this type of attire is the so-called shawl lapel, which is typical of tuxedo jackets. The color is also key. A deep navy is an excellent choice, as it appears black under artificial lighting.
It’s worth mentioning that some people also opt for a white tuxedo. This is quite a “challenging” garment to wear, but it can be a real success if you’re an advanced player in the world of men’s fashion.

Spodnie
The pants should be dark, well-fitted, and of the proper length. It’s best to pair them with suspenders to keep the pants in place and help maintain an impeccable appearance. You can also add a cummerbund, which serves to prevent the shirt from wrinkling.
Shirt
When it comes to color, there are several options here, but we recommend sticking with the traditional white shirt. It should feature a placket covering the buttons and, importantly, cuffs designed for cufflinks.
Shoes
Complete the look with high-quality patent leather shoes. You really have two options here: oxfords or wholecuts. In other words, you should opt for shoes with a sleek upper and closed lacing. Since black-tie events take place in the evening, the shoes should be black.
Accessories
It’s time for the details – and they must look impeccable! Even the most carefully thought-out outfit won’t succeed if these are overlooked.
