What are shoe trees and what is their purpose?

Shoe trees are essential accessories that help keep your shoes in excellent condition for years. They consist of a toe and heel section connected by a spring-loaded metal rod, which makes them easy to insert and remove from the shoe. Their main task is to maintain the shoe’s proper shape—preventing deforming, creasing, collapsing, or shrinking. Shoes that are damp from sweat or rain—especially those made of natural leather—tend to shrink if left to dry without support.

It’s important to note that shoe trees are useful for all types of shoes, especially those made from natural leather. Leather shoes are more prone to losing their original shape, but when properly cared for, they can last much longer than other types of footwear. Leather shoes are also typically more expensive, so it's worth protecting that investment through proper storage. Still, shoe trees are excellent accessories for all shoe types. It’s best to use them from the very first wear, inserting them after each use. How to choose the right shoe trees?

One key thing to remember is that despite the flexible rod connecting the toe and heel, shoe trees are not universal. They come in different sizes—just like shoes—and should be matched accordingly. Properly fitted shoe trees won’t leave any space at the toe or heel. If you're struggling to insert them, they're probably too large for your shoes.
