Scrunchies have quite an interesting history. Most people probably don’t spend much time thinking about how they originated—but it’s worth knowing. Scrunchie hair ties were patented in 1987 by Rommy Revson, a singer and pianist. She created the first prototype because she wanted a gentler alternative to the metal hair ties used in the 1980s. Revson named the decorative hair accessory “Scunci,” after her poodle. The name “scrunchie” was a natural evolution—coming from the verb “to scrunch,” which describes the way the fabric bunches and wrinkles. Interestingly, after patenting the design, Revson spent a great deal of time involved in legal battles with both manufacturers and her own lawyers. These hair ties became especially popular in the 1980s and ’90s—including large, oversized versions. Scrunchies experienced a revival in the 2010s, and their popularity continues today.

Revson’s scrunchies were incredibly popular in the 1980s and ’90s, offering a better alternative for tying long hair. Celebrities like Demi Moore, Janet Jackson, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Madonna wore them. Their popularity continued into the 1990s, when scrunchies appeared in iconic sitcoms such as Friends and Full House. Interestingly, even female astronauts used scrunchies during space missions! In the 2000s, their popularity declined—Carrie Bradshaw famously mocked them in Sex and the City. However, scrunchies experienced a strong revival in the 2010s. Celebrities like Bella and Gigi Hadid and singer Lizzo brought them back into fashion. They even appeared on Netflix when the character Eleven wore one in the hit series Stranger Things.
