Our clothing can completely change how we are perceived. Although people often say we shouldn’t care too much about how we look, the truth is — we still need to present ourselves impeccably. When it comes to suits, some people wear them only on special occasions. It’s not always easy to feel completely at ease in one, but it’s definitely worth learning a few essential rules. By applying them, we’ll not only look better but also feel more confident and comfortable.

Sports jacket

One of the common issues we may encounter is improperly fastening the buttons on a jacket. There are three main types of jackets: those with 2 buttons, 3 buttons, and double-breasted jackets, each with a different button arrangement.

The most important rules

In a two-button jacket, only the top button should be fastened.

In a three-button jacket, you should fasten only the middle button. Optionally, you may fasten the top two buttons.

Three-button jacket

If we're dealing with a double-breasted jacket, the bottom button may remain unfastened — but only if the button layout allows for it (i.e. when there are two functional front buttons). Other acceptable options include fastening all buttons, or only the bottom button. The latter approach is mainly for those who are already confident wearing double-breasted jackets and have developed their own individual sense of style.

Sitting with grace

Unfortunately, knowing how to button your jacket isn’t enough. We must remember that the double-breasted jacket is the only one that should remain buttoned when sitting down. On the other hand, two- and three-button jackets should always be unbuttoned before sitting, and then buttoned again upon standing. In formal situations, your jacket should always be buttoned while standing. This rule does not apply in more casual settings.

What about vests?

It must be said that very few people decide to purchase a three-piece suit. Likewise, not many people know the proper rules to follow when wearing one. In vests, it is customary to leave the bottom button unfastened.
