Slim fit shirts are designed for men with a narrow waist and well-developed chest. Classic fit shirts, thanks to extra pleats at the shoulder blades and no darts on the back, are ideal for men with a smaller chest-to-waist difference. They provide a perfect fit for this body type without restricting movement.

As with any other part of the wardrobe, a shirt should match the occasion. How to choose a shirt based on the level of formality?

SHIRT FOR A BOW TIE

The most formal type of shirt is the shirt for a bow tie.

FORMAL MEN’S SHIRT

A high level of formality is indicated by features such as cufflinks. Cufflinks are considered a type of jewelry for formal occasions, so wearing them in casual settings is inappropriate. Shirts with cufflinks should not be worn without a tie. A notable formal shirt style is the pin collar shirt, which may or may not include cufflink cuffs. This shirt type was especially popular in the early 20th century. It requires a tie, and ideally, also a vest and a jacket. Formal shirts usually feature a covered placket and white color. While there are some exceptions, white is essential for the most formal occasions, such as weddings.

SEMI-FORMAL MEN’S SHIRT

Semi-formal shirts allow for more color variety. Besides classic white, shades like pink and light blue are also good choices. An open placket is a good option here.

INFORMAL MEN’S SHIRT

For informal shirts, a button-down collar is an excellent choice. It is ideal for wear without a tie, keeping the collar in place. Informal shirts often include a stitched placket with extra stitching behind the buttons, indicating a casual character. The formality can be further reduced with unique colors, patterns, or fabrics like cotton flannel, linen, or thickly woven fabrics such as oxford shirt.

Types of shirt collars

The differences regarding collars are mainly based on the opening angle of the flap. Collars are one of the main differences when it comes to men's shirts. It's worth knowing them!

CUTAWAY COLLAR

When it comes to shirts, the most open collar is the cutaway collar. Its lapels run from the center of the neck to just above the buttons. It's typically worn with a tie and requires a good understanding of style if worn without one. It looks best on tall, slim men with long faces, as it visually broadens the jawline.

SEMI-SPREAD COLLAR

Semi-spread collar is a collar that is not as open as the cutaway one. However, it is open enough to perfectly show the tie lying between its lapels. Therefore, it carries the advantages of a cutaway collar, but also, thanks to the length of its lapels, it sticks perfectly to the jacket when we wear a shirt without a tie. It’s a versatile option that suits most face shapes.

KENT COLLAR

Kent collar is less common today but ideal for bow tie shirts due to its narrow spread. It's very versatile and suits nearly all face types.

Cuffs

Another often overlooked detail when choosing a shirt is the cuff style. There are single-button cuffs (with a rounded finish) and two-button cuffs (with an angled finish). Single-button cuffs are better for shorter men. Two-button cuffs work well for taller men or those who wear large watches, as one button can be undone to fit over the watch. However, they are rare. The most formal cuff is square-ended. A rounded cuff is more comfortable for long wear but slightly less formal.

How should a men’s shirt fit?

When fitting a shirt to your body, several key aspects ensure comfort and a polished appearance. Shirts must be selected with care – no compromises here.

Collar

The collar should allow you to fit two or three fingers between your neck and the collar. A larger collar will create a gap when turning your head, highlighting a poor fit.

Shoulders

The shoulder seam should reach the end of your shoulder line. The deltoid should sit within the sleeve.

Waist

A well-fitted shirt should look good both standing and sitting. When sitting, the waist expands, so ensure some room around the waist to avoid strain or visible pulling at the buttons.

Sleeves

Proper sleeve length ends at the base of the thumb, without riding up or hanging too low. There should be a slight fabric allowance at the elbow for unrestricted arm movement.

Back

The shirt should taper slightly at the waist but also allow some extra fabric for comfort and elegance.

White men’s shirt
