Custom-made suit
A suit made to measure is a worthwhile investment. It’s worth having at least one perfectly tailored model in your wardrobe for occasions when you need to look impeccable. So how should a well-cut, perfectly fitted suit sit on your body?
Jacket
A good construction of our jacket is essential. It’s important that it is soft, without excessive, stiffening padding. The padding in the shoulders is key — formal jackets tend to have heavily padded shoulders, a feature inspired by military uniforms. Shoulder pads visually add volume to the shoulders, which in turn conveys a sense of authority and strength. However, we must also remember to maintain the natural line of the shoulders. The angle of the gorge (where the lapel meets the collar) should be high. The width of the lapels should be about half the width of the shoulder. A formal suit jacket usually also has slightly wider sleeves to provide space for a shirt with cufflinks, which adds to the level of formality. Lastly, we cannot forget about the proper length — the jacket should divide your silhouette into two equal parts and cover the buttocks.
Pants
Here, you should opt for a modern cut, characterized by a taper from the knees downward. Pants should break only once over the shoe. The legs should be cut at a slight angle so that the hem slopes toward the back, allowing it to cover part of the heel, which improves how the garment drapes and moves. If these conditions are met, you can be confident that you align with both the latest fashion rules and the principles of classic men’s elegance—while also ensuring comfort.
Shirt
Starting from the top—the collar circumference of your shirt should be chosen so that you can comfortably fit two or three fingers between the collar and your neck. If the collar is too large, an unsightly gap will appear between the collar and your neck when you turn your head. The shoulder seam of the shirt should align roughly with the end of your natural shoulder line, while the deltoid muscle should be placed inside the sleeve. A well-fitted shirt should look elegant whether you’re standing or sitting. For this reason, there should be a slight excess of fabric at the waist for comfort and movement. How do you recognize the correct sleeve length? The cuff should stop at the base of your thumb—neither falling farther down nor resting above the wrist.
