Choosing a tie made from high-quality material with the right pattern is half the battle. But the other, equally important half of looking impeccable is tying it properly. Even the most beautiful, top-class tie will look sloppy if it’s tied in an untidy way. So, how do you tie a tie?

Before we get into the details, it’s worth keeping a few basic rules in mind when it comes to tying a tie. First, it should always be pulled tight enough so that the top button of the shirt is not visible. Additionally, you should tighten it firmly to create an elegant taper. If the tie’s construction allows, you can also tie it with a “dimple” under the knot, which adds a touch of character and sophistication.

It turns out that the Windsor knot, although very commonly seen, is not always the best stylistic option. What problems does it create? First and foremost, it doesn’t look good with certain types of collars. If you choose to wrap the tie twice, you also have to consider that a large portion of the tie will be “consumed,” which can make it difficult to control its length. That’s why we recommend a different, classic, and stylish alternative.

How to tie a tie – step-by-step guide

One of the most universal, elegant, and at the same time simplest knots is the so-called four-in-hand knot.

How to tie a tie

1. To start, shape the narrow end of the tie so that when you hold it between your fingers, its cross-section resembles the letter C.

2. Next, position the wider end of the tie so that it runs perpendicular to the axis of the narrower end.

3. Bring the tie over to the other side and form a loop around the knot, pulling the lower part of the knot a little tighter so it wraps the tie more snugly. Keep holding your “C profile” with your fingers throughout this step.

4. Hold the tie in place and bring the wide end up through the loop around the knot.

5. How can you tell if you’ve tied the tie correctly? At this point, the dimple under the knot should already be visible. To enhance the effect, take the tie and pinch it between your fingers to create an accordion-like fold, forming a cross-section that resembles the letter M.

6. We now have the letters “C” and “M,” so the final step is to tighten the tie. This will reinforce the dimple. You can gently stretch it to achieve the desired shape and carefully push it out with your thumb.

7. Finally, pull on the “ears” of the knot to create a dynamic taper. Fasten the shirt’s top button and tighten the tie. And remember: the shirt should never be visible above the tie!

A tie knotted this way will undoubtedly complete your elegant outfit. Of course, remember that practice makes perfect!
