A visit to the opera or theatre is a special occasion that deserves to be honored with appropriately chosen attire. However, since for most of us it’s not an everyday event, we may face some dilemmas when selecting the right elements for the outfit. That’s where we come in to help!

How to dress for the theatre?

Do theatres have their own dress code? It’s not always so clear-cut. However, there is a general rule: dress elegantly, but also comfortably. If the performance is long and you’ve chosen uncomfortable clothing, instead of enjoying the show, you’ll be counting down the minutes until you can go home. And that’s certainly not the goal!

Evening tuxedo

It’s important to check what type of theatre or opera you’re attending. There are different kinds of venues and performances, so it’s worth researching in advance to avoid a faux pas. Even though it’s often said that audience members can dress as they wish, a typically casual outfit is definitely not the best choice. If you’d like more details, it’s a good idea to visit the venue’s website.

What to wear to the theatre?

In the past, going to the opera or theatre meant pulling out your tuxedo and wearing the most formal pieces in your wardrobe. Choosing highly formal attire is still the only proper option for certain operas and theatres, but in most cases today, these rules have become more relaxed. Your safest choice is to dress in business casual, leaning slightly toward the more formal side.

Tuxedo

A tuxedo is the most formal option, reserved for outings of the highest importance. Pair it with classic oxfords and be sure to choose a dress shirt with cuffs for cufflinks.

Suit and turtleneck

A versatile combination: a suit styled in a business casual manner with a classic men’s turtleneck. The suit provides the formal element, while the turtleneck slightly reduces the level of formality, adding character and individuality to your look.

Versatile men’s sweaters

Chinos and a sport jacket

The last and least formal option: pair chinos with an elegant jacket, either plain or with a subtle pattern, and a button-down shirt. A perfect finishing touch would be loafers or brogues.

Remember to consider the time of day when the event takes place. If it’s in the evening, your outfit should lean more formal. During the day, you can allow yourself a bit more “relaxed” styling. All that’s left is to wish you an enjoyable performance!
