Solaro – a remarkable summer fabric with a military heritage

Solaro is a summer fabric distinguished by its unique construction—featuring a weft and warp in different colors, which creates an iridescent effect in sunlight. The classic weave for Solaro is twill or a wide herringbone.

Although Solaro was made famous by the Italian style icon Gianni Agnelli, its origins date back to the early 20th century in colonial Britain. Louis Westenra Sambon, conducting research in the tropics, proposed Solaro as a technical fabric.

The original purpose of Solaro was to protect soldiers from UV rays, which at the time were believed to be a cause of fatigue and poor mental health among troops. However, it was eventually discovered that Solaro did not possess the properties attributed to it, and the military ceased using it as a uniform fabric. 

Solaro was brought back to life by classic menswear elegance, as it turned out that a suit made from this fabric could be a brilliant concept for summer daywear.

The suit shown in the photos is a double-breasted piece made from Solaro-type fabric sourced from the luxury Italian manufacturer Loro Piana. The suit was tailored in the Miler Menswear workshop. Currently, the only company that holds the rights to use the name Solaro is the British firm Smith Woollens. However, many mills offer fabrics identical in composition and production technology.
