Casual suit

Casual suit – how does it differ from a classic suit?

A casual suit is something between a sports jacket and a traditional suit. While it shares a lot in common with the former, the biggest difference is that a jacket is just one part of an outfit, whereas a suit—even a casual one—always includes both a jacket and trousers made from the same fabric. In terms of fabric and cut, however, it has more in common with a sports jacket than with a classic suit.

Very formal suits are usually made from tightly woven fabric, which makes them smooth and gives them a slight sheen due to how they reflect light. The most official ones also tend to lack patterns and are usually in dark colors like black or navy blue. A casual suit, on the other hand—much like a sports jacket—is typically made from more loosely woven fabric that absorbs light and often gives the garment a pronounced texture. Patterns (such as checks) and lighter colors like shades of grey or brown are also common. Furthermore, a classic suit generally features wider sleeves and trouser legs, whereas the casual version tends to be slimmer, giving it a less formal appearance. The latter also has less shoulder padding, which highlights the natural line of the shoulders. Jackets that are part of a formal suit also tend to be slightly longer than those included in a casual one.

When to wear a casual suit?

This type of outfit is less formal than a classic suit but still suitable for important occasions that require an elegant appearance. A casual suit is a great choice for a wedding, especially if you're attending as a guest. However, you can also wear one as the groom—for example, if your wedding has a boho theme. Its characteristic features are ease, creativity, and naturalness. It will look especially beautiful during an outdoor ceremony. Beyond weddings, it's suitable for all kinds of less formal events. It will come in handy for work, family gatherings, or celebrations like a christening, 18th birthday, milestone wedding anniversary, and many more.

Casual suits - styling ideas

If you'd like to maintain a fairly formal appearance, choose a white shirt or one in another neutral color. If possible, opt for a plain casual suit or one with a subtle, not too eye-catching pattern. Add a tie or a bow tie and a white linen pocket square. On your feet, wear monk shoes. If you can afford to be more relaxed, this type of outfit is perfect for that! You can be a bit bold and go for unique accessories. You might skip the tie altogether or choose one in an interesting color or bold pattern. A colorful silk pocket square will also look fantastic. To complete a casual suit look, you can opt for brogues, tassel loafers, or oxfords.
