The history of the men’s vest
It is not easy to determine the exact history of this part of our wardrobe. The most distant ancestor of the vest is a type of knee-length coat worn by men in the second half of the 17th century and throughout the 18th century. This garment originated in France and later appeared in England. Worn by the nobility, it was a knee-length jacket usually paired with pants and a coat of the same length. This ensemble eventually evolved into the three-piece suit. Interestingly, vests originally included sleeves, which were gradually removed in the 18th century for practical reasons. After the French Revolution in 1789, anti-aristocratic sentiments grew in France and other parts of Europe. As a result, vests for both women and men became more modest and played a secondary role compared to the coat.
In the 19th century, with the introduction of the jacket, the vest took a back seat in the hierarchy of the three-piece suit. It was mainly used to conceal suspenders and to store a pocket watch in a specially designed pocket. However, in the 1920s, with the widespread adoption of belts and wristwatches, the role of the vest changed once again. Designs began to move away from traditional patterns, embracing more relaxed and expressive styles. All of these transformations brought us to a point where the vest is no longer just a functional piece of clothing, but rather a significant, stylish, and classic accessory. Today, it appears both as a formal suit vest and as a more casual menswear option.

Men’s vests for suits
There are essentially two ways to wear a vest with a suit. You can choose one that matches the suit in color and fabric—this is the safest and most formal option. Alternatively, you can opt for a contrasting vest to add personality to your look. If styled carefully, this can refresh your suit's appearance. However, a differently colored vest often lowers the outfit's formality and increases the chance of a fashion misstep—so this option is best suited to those with a solid understanding of classic menswear.
