A black tuxedo designed in a modern cut that remains faithful to the principles of classic men’s elegance. This is a formal evening garment, suitable only for nighttime occasions and special events—perfect as a wedding tuxedo or, for bold young men, as prom or graduation attire. The classic tuxedo features shawl lapels covered in satin, high-waisted pants intended to be worn with suspenders, and a stripe running down the side of the pants. The jacket fastens with a single button and is designed without vents or a boutonnière. Each tuxedo is accompanied by a matching cummerbund to complete the formal look.

Please note: The tuxedo pants will be delivered with unfinished hems to allow for individual length adjustment.

Men’s tuxedo

Our black tuxedo is a blend of timelessness and modern fashion trends. A tuxedo is a formal outfit worn for evening occasions and special events. It works perfectly as a wedding tuxedo, and for those who want to express their individuality in fashion, it’s also an interesting alternative for prom. The outfit features shawl lapels covered with silk satin and high-waisted suspenders pants with a stripe running along the leg. The jacket, without vents or a boutonniere, fastens with a single button.

The history of the tuxedo

In England, during the 1830s, evening parties became extremely popular. Naturally, there arose a need to create clothing that was less formal than the tailcoat but still capable of providing a man with a spectacular appearance using black and white. The first model similar to today’s tuxedo was commissioned by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) from the tailor Henry Poole on the legendary Savile Row, London’s street of tailors. It was an evening outfit featuring a short jacket. The tuxedo in its current form appeared only in the 1930s as a less formal alternative to the tailcoat.

Suspenders pants

Suspenders go hand in hand with the tuxedo. The pants feature a higher waist, one or two pleats, and a silk stripe made from the same silk as the jacket’s lapels. This type of combination perfectly fits the formal and elegant character of evening wear. Traditionally, white suspenders are worn with a tuxedo.

Difference between a tuxedo and a suit

A suit is also an elegant garment, but it is much more versatile in terms of the occasions on which it can be worn. There are various levels of formality for suits, whereas a tuxedo is reserved solely for formal events. Suits come in different colors and even patterns, while tuxedos are typically black or navy blue. There are also structural differences. A tuxedo features velvet-covered buttons, silk lapels on the jacket, and stripes on the pants—details rarely found on suits. The tuxedo jacket usually has no vent or two vents at the back, whereas these rules do not apply to suits. Tuxedo pants, moreover, do not have cuffs (which suits may have or not), have a higher waist, and should be worn with suspenders. Aside from suspenders, an important accessory distinguishing this type of garment is a velvet cummerbund (included with the Broadway tuxedo set).

What shirt to wear with a tuxedo?

The most formal tuxedo shirts are those with a stand collar and quilted bib front with stud buttons. Shirts with a pleated front and spread collar represent a slightly less formal level. The most commonly chosen and least formal shirt is the one with a spread collar and hidden placket.

Shoes to wear with a tuxedo

The main accepted rule in men’s fashion regarding evening shoes is that they should be as simple in form and as minimally decorated as possible, meaning having as few seams as possible. Therefore, we can choose between two types of shoes — court shoes or oxfords. The former are made from patent leather, while oxfords come in two versions: made from patent leather and from calf leather polished to a high shine.

Cummerbund for a tuxedo

Since a single-breasted tuxedo jacket is unbuttoned when sitting down, a properly worn single-breasted tuxedo also includes a cummerbund (or a vest) around the hips. This ensures that others won’t see your shirt wrinkling unattractively around the waist. Interestingly, today cummerbunds are more popular than vests, and they are not worn with double-breasted tuxedos. We include a complimentary cummerbund with our Broadway tuxedo.

Bow tie for a tuxedo

A tuxedo should be paired with a bow tie made from fabric matching the color of the lapels. Commonly, tuxedos feature both “batwing” style bow ties, which resemble a ribbon when untied, and 2.5-inch bow ties, which have a more classic bow shape.
