The formality of patent leather shoes
Patent leather shoes are a highly formal type of footwear. They should be reserved exclusively for formal ensembles, most often evening occasions such as a black-tie banquet. They pair perfectly with a tuxedo or a classic black suit. This is a refined choice that deserves to be approached with the utmost care and sophistication.
The history of oxfords
Oxfords are a timeless choice, recognized by virtually every well-dressed gentleman. The history of this iconic footwear dates back to the 1830s, with its origins in England. However, it wasn’t until fifty years later that they gained widespread popularity. The first pair was crafted by the masters of the legendary John Lobb shoemaking workshop in London. Today, over a century later, oxfords remain a classic and exceptionally elegant option.
Why are oxfords considered formal?
The most formal shoes are those with the fewest visible seams. This is why oxfords without broguing or a capped toe are considered the pinnacle of formality. An exception to this rule are wholecuts; although they are crafted from a single piece of leather and feature no visible stitching on the upper, they are regarded as slightly less formal than oxfords. Additionally, patent leather shoes are seen as more formal than their matte counterparts.

Alongside Goodyear welting, which is synonymous with British elegance, Blake is the second traditional method of shoemaking, historically linked to Italian refinement. This technique involves stitching the sole directly to the upper. Lyman Reed Blake patented his shoe-sewing machine in 1858, revolutionizing footwear production. While Goodyear welting is widely regarded as the most prestigious method, valued for its ability to be resoled and its superior resistance to rain and snow, the Blake construction also offers notable advantages. A Blake sole is exceptionally flexible, making it highly appreciated for the comfort it provides. For these reasons, Blake construction was adopted as the leading method by the Italian shoe industry. Our oxfords are crafted using this very technique.
HOW TO READ A SIZE CHART?
To make it easier for our customers to choose the size of classic footwear, we express our sizing not by the length of the shoe insole but by the length of the foot, which can easily be measured by oneself in the way described below.

NOTE:
If your big toe is not the longest toe on your foot, align the toe that extends the furthest on the measuring tape.
