Questions and answers

The belt size is measured from the inside edge of the buckle (where the buckle pin rests) to the middle hole. This measurement corresponds to your waist size. A properly sized belt should fasten at the middle hole, ensuring a balanced, symmetrical look while leaving room for adjustment in either direction.

When fastened at the middle hole, the end of the belt should pass through the first belt loop of your trousers and finish around that point. As a general rule, around 5–10 cm of the belt should extend beyond the buckle.

A 3.5 cm belt is one of the most versatile choices, working well with formal, smart-casual, and casual outfits. The key is to make sure the belt fits comfortably through the belt loops of your trousers. Narrower belts, around 3 cm, tend to suit more formal looks, while wider belts, around 4 cm, work particularly well with casual trousers. When choosing the right width, always consider the size of the belt loops – the belt should pass through them easily and sit neatly.

In classic menswear, a leather belt should complement the colour of your shoes, ideally matching both the shade and the leather finish – for example, a matte black belt with black Oxford shoes. For more casual outfits, slight variations in tone are perfectly acceptable, but strongly contrasting colours are generally best avoided.

For a suit, choose a classic belt, around 3–3.5 cm wide, made from smooth full-grain or calf leather and finished with a simple, discreet buckle in silver or brass. Avoid heavy stitching, oversized buckles, and heavily textured leather.

A dress belt differs from a casual belt mainly in its width, buckle, and material. For formal outfits, a belt around 3–3.5 cm wide, made from smooth full-grain leather and finished with a subtle silver buckle, is the recommended choice. Casual outfits allow for wider belts made from vegetable-tanned leather, suede, or woven materials, often paired with a less formal buckle. These styles can add a distinctive finishing touch to jeans or chinos.

A braided belt is not the best choice for formal business or evening suits, where a classic smooth leather belt is more appropriate. However, it works perfectly with less formal outfits, especially summer looks. It pairs well with linen or cotton suits, tailored separates, chinos and loafers, and can also complement a wide range of casual outfits.

Casual belts around 3–4 cm wide are the best choice for jeans, particularly styles made from leather with a more distinctive character. Good options include thicker full-grain leather, suede, and vegetable-tanned leather. Bolder buckles and prominent stitching also work well, emphasising the relaxed character of the outfit.

A genuine leather belt offers significantly greater durability and flexibility, while developing a distinctive patina over time. Synthetic materials tend to crack quickly where the belt bends around the buckle and are less resistant to everyday wear and tear.

The quality of a belt depends on the type of leather and the craftsmanship. Full-grain leather is valued for its durability and the way it develops a natural patina over time. Look for even, smoothly finished edges, precise stitching and a sturdy buckle. A good belt ultimately comes down to a combination of high-quality materials, durable construction and careful craftsmanship.

A leather belt may stretch slightly over time and adapt to the wearer’s shape, particularly around the most frequently used belt hole. The extent of this depends on the type and thickness of the leather, the belt’s construction and how often it is worn. With proper use, however, a high-quality belt will retain its shape and should not stretch significantly.

To keep a leather belt in good condition and looking its best, regularly remove any dirt with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For smooth leather belts, a leather cream or conditioner can be applied occasionally, following the manufacturer’s care instructions. Keep the belt away from excessive moisture and heat, and avoid letting the leather dry out. Store the belt hanging or loosely rolled, avoiding folding it tightly, as this can cause the leather to lose its shape or crack.

A belt is not essential if the trousers fit perfectly at the waist or feature side adjusters. A belt is also generally avoided with trousers that have buttons for suspenders or when wearing a waistcoat, as the buckle may create a visible bulge underneath.

A man’s belt is traditionally fastened from left to right, meaning that once it is threaded through the buckle, the loose end points towards the wearer’s right side. This is a long-standing menswear convention rooted in the traditional way men’s clothing is fastened.

A belt and suspenders should never be worn together, as they both serve the same purpose of keeping trousers in place. Wearing both at the same time is considered a basic sartorial mistake and disrupts the balance of classic menswear.
